Area of Rescue Assistance is an important part of accessibility.  These areas are designated spots for those individuals who can not escape a building in the event of an emergency, such as a fire or tornado.

In fires and other emergencies, elevators are not an option.  My chair is way to heavy for anyone to safely carry down a flight of steps.  EMS knows to come to these spots in the event of an emergency to help evacuate the disabled.  Usually there are stair chairs close by to be utilized by EMS.

When I went to Wausau West, part of my emergency plan was these designated areas which included a stair chair.

  1. Those of us who are freely mobile, cannot fully understand what these areas must mean to those who can not easily move away from danger. Thank you for educating us!

    1. Thank you for your comment, Jean! Bringing understanding to our issues as "rollers" is the reason I write this blog.
